Unlocking East Africa's 3S economy

BuildX, East Africa

In East Africa, we are working to lay the foundations for an East Africa climate-smart forest economy. In this phase, we are working with BuildX (an architecture, engineering, and construction B Corp™) based in Kenya, to unlock the forest economy in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The opportunity presented by a regional value chain and market through this initiative is very exciting to the program. This initiative enables us to generate learnings on opportunities and challenges for realizing a CSFE in East Africa, a regional approach to value-chain development, the potential for a Climate Smart Forest Economy to support restoration, and how to change behaviors and attitudes towards mass timber. This initiative is demonstrating the feasibility and activating demand for mass timber to meet construction needs in the region. Specific activities include:

  • Launching a CLT prototype in Nairobi as an exhibition space for people to experience mass timber building;

  • Assessing potential demand (for mass timber construction) and supply (of timber from sustainably managed forests) over a 30-year timeframe under different scenarios;

  • Carbon modeling to quantify likely carbon benefits of a regional mass timber sector;

  • Developing safeguards, and livelihood mapping to maximize environmental, social, and ecological benefits; and

  • Conducting a behavior change study to understand the interventions needed to increase the adoption of mass timber in the region.

In addition, we are engaging relevant stakeholders interested in supporting a Climate Smart Forest Economy in East Arica to develop a network  that can support growth and help address barriers in the value chain. We are also engaging actors to advocate for necessary investments to support value chain development.

BUILDX'S IMPACT

This BI's impact assessment will be supplemented by carbon modeling, the development of safeguards, and livelihood mapping to maximize environmental, social, and ecological benefits. In addition, we are working with the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics to conduct a behavior change study to understand the interventions needed to increase the adoption of mass timber. For BuildX, the program is supporting the validation of the opportunity to build with timber, analyzing the carbon impact of the industry, the development of safeguards, building of a community of stakeholders, and fundraising for investments.
